How does music make an imagined world feel like home? In this talk, Daniel White explores the role of music in making fantasy worlds feel real, accessible and inhabitable. Drawing on his book The Music of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings: Sounds of Home in the Fantasy Franchise , he examines how music shapes conceptions of home across two of the most influential fantasy franchises of recent decades. Focusing on places such as the Shire, Hogwarts, Rivendell, and the Burrow, the talk considers how music gives these settings a sense of warmth and homeliness, while also exploring other less homely spaces. It also asks why imagined homes matter so deeply to audiences and fans, and how fantasy worlds are not only watched but inhabited through soundtrack consumption, gaming, tourism, and fan practice. Bringing together perspectives from film and media studies and musicology, the talk offers an accessible introduction to the book and a broader reflection on fantasy media and the musical articulation of home.
